Betriebssportgemeinschaft Chemie Leipzig e.V., commonly known as BSG Chemie Leipzig, is a German football club based in Leipzig, Saxony. The club currently competes in the Regionalliga Nordost, the fourth tier of the German football league system.
History
BSG Chemie Leipzig was founded in 1950 as the sports club of the Buna chemical plant in Leipzig. The club quickly rose through the ranks of the East German football league system, winning the DDR-Liga (the second tier of East German football) in 1954 and earning promotion to the DDR-Oberliga, the top tier of East German football.
BSG Chemie Leipzig spent the majority of its existence in the DDR-Oberliga, achieving its greatest success in 1964 when it won the East German Cup. The club also reached the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1967.
Reunification and Regionalliga
After the reunification of Germany in 1990, BSG Chemie Leipzig was initially placed in the third tier of the German football league system. The club experienced financial difficulties and was relegated to the fourth tier in 2008.
In recent years, BSG Chemie Leipzig has stabilized and established itself as a competitive team in the Regionalliga Nordost. The club has a strong fan base and a tradition of playing attacking football.
